What is funding rate arbitrage?
Perpetual futures contracts use a funding rate mechanism to keep prices anchored to the underlying asset. When more traders are long, longs pay shorts. When more are short, shorts pay longs. This rate resets every 1–8 hours depending on the exchange.
Cross-exchange funding rate arbitrage means: if Bybit's BTC rate is +0.08% per 8h and Hyperliquid's is -0.03% per 8h, you go short BTC on Bybit (collecting +0.08%) and long BTC on Hyperliquid (collecting +0.03% from the negative rate paying you). Net: +0.11% every 8 hours — both sides pay you.
Your position is delta-neutral — if BTC goes up $1,000, your long gains exactly what your short loses. You're not betting on direction, you're farming yield.
